UULS Humanitarian Conference: Community Leadership Forum

I asked the following questions to the panel:I was invited by UCSI University's scholars to moderate a panel on creating social impact at MaGIC, Cyberjaya on 1st October 2017 for their annual leadership lecture series.

Speakers:
  1. Dr. Hartini Zainudin (Founder, Yayasan Chow Kit)
  2. Teacher Raj Ridvan Singh (Founder, SOLS 24/7 Malaysia)
  3. Ms Quek Sue Yian (Executive Director, Hong Leong Foundation)
  4. Ms Clare Walker (Director of Education & Society, British Council Malaysia)
  5. Zaim Mohzani (Co-Founder & Chairperson, Nation Building School) [Moderator]

Theme: “Creating Impact, Leading Change”

I asked the following questions to the panel:

  1. tIntroductory question: Tell us your story. What is the journey that brought you to where you are today?
  2. The word “impact” has become a loaded word. Millennials or Gen-Y are categorised as a generation that wants to make an “impact”. What does “impact” mean? How does it look like? Can we measure it? Any examples from your work?
  3. From your experience working with young people, what do you see as the main barrier or challenge from them taking lead in making a difference in their community? (It can be anything from low self-esteem to lack of resources)
  4. According to the Commonwealth’s Global Youth Development Index 2016, young people are turning to volunteerism, activism and social entrepreneurship at a scale never been seen before. What is your advice for young people in wanting to take that very first step?

There's a video to recap the two days of the conference at www.facebook.com/events/1941643346124994/permalink/1980416155581046/.

This event is organised by U-Schos (UCSI Scholars’ Circle), made up of scholarship awardees of UCSI University Trust, whose achievements demonstrate a sustained level of excellence in academics, sports and extra-curricular activities. In line with U-Schos’ objective and to inculcate the value of leadership and social responsibility among youth in Malaysia, the circle is currently organising its flagship event - U-Schos Leadership Lecture Series (ULLS). For this year's U-Schos Leadership Lecture Series (ULLS), it is themed “Empowering Lives Through Humanitarian Initiatives”. The 5th ULLS is a humanitarian conference aiming to provide an inspiring platform for youth
